Six Reasons To Buy an Elliptigo (& One Reason Not To)

An ElliptiGO.

Steve has been struggling with his own running in the last few years, he has a herniated disc in his back, which causes all kinds of problems. He does SO well being so supportive of my own running when his body will just not let him run much more than an hour.

When he tried out the Elliptigo, he found that it did not irriate his injuries, and he loved it. We both agreed that we would get one as soon as we could.

Pro 1: Does not irritate running injuries that are aggravated by the impact of running

But, EllipiGO’s are no minor purchase (starting at $1799 for the basic 3 Gear model), and we are saving for a wedding. We put it on out long term list, and tried to put it out of sight.

Con 1: Expensive

However:

More and more, we kept seeing them everywhere…..no, not in person, can you imagine Kentucky being a hotspot for them?

Haha, not likely! I mean through social media.

About a month ago, Steve said he was going to sell his Motorcycle so we could buy one.

The next week he had a friend sell it for him (as it was back in Michigan). In this crazy small world, another friend of his, Clint (Verran) happened to be the one to buy it (without knowing it was Steves bike!) within a few days.

The day we got the check in the mail, I called Jeff Caron. Jeff was the one who introduced us to ElliptiGO, and has been a great friend to me over the years. We purchased it that day, and with the GO and rack, we had $50 of the bike money to spare (which actually went on installing the hitch on the car).

We now have our own lovely ElliptiGO 8C in Red, we named it Apollo (Creed- geddit? :P) and something tells me we will not be able to hold off too many years without getting another one.

They are such an amazing company, so supportive, and truly understand runners. Every ElliptiGO staff member I have intereacted with has been awesome, and made it a very smooth process.

Pro 2: Good company that actually carews

So, now we have another cross training tool, and one that doesn’t even feel like something that is robbing me of running. ElliptiGO‘s are SO MUCH FUN. The kind of thing you would pay to use just for leisure (seriously!!), and you can go really fast on them, which just adds to it.

Pro 3: It’s fun!

ElliptiGO’s are also one of the closest ways you can mimic running while injured, without actually doing it.

Pro 3: Mimics running very well

This is a lifesaver for those of us who have had major injuries that required hours and hours and HOURS in the pool in the past, and of course, we do not all have access to Alter-G treadmills or underwater treadmills.

Pro 4: Good for those who are not Olympians to maintain or improve fitness 😉

We are very excited to spend many hours getting to know our ElliptiGO this summer, and for those of you who are limited in the amount of running you can do, this may be the way forward. You will not regret it!

I know it may seem like a lot of money, but honestly, it really is worth it.

If you have found that you have struggled with a few injuries in a row now, this way you can get the closest thing you can to running, without the impact, and you may find that you can get yourself strong enough to where you can get back to running more. Sometimes when we have those injuries it feels like you are always behind as one thing after the next happens.

Pro 5: If you are injury prone, this is a lifesaver for your running

If you think about all the money you have spent on PT, other therapies and even just trying to cheer yourself up when things do go wrong, you will find that the ElliptiGO does not exceed that by much, and this can be a lifelong investment.

Pro 6: Saves money on expensive therapy

Oh, and I have not been paid by ElliptiGO to write this post, in fact, they have no idea I am writing it.

This is my opinion, and my recommendation to you. We thought it was a good enough tool that we would purchase one just a few months before our wedding, THAT is how cool they are 🙂

You can find out where you can take one for a test ride here, and if you are considering purchasing one, please let me know, I would love to answer any questions/doubts you have about it. Just email me 🙂

So, overall, that is 6 pros and just one con. I get that one con is raaaather a big one, but it really is worth it, especially if you are injury prone!

Oh, and one more thing….

I recorded a podcast episode for Runners Connect with Alan Webb (yes, the American record holder in the mile), Lynda Huey (the pioneer of pool running), and Darren Brown (ElliptiGO Marketing Manager and husband/coach of Sarah Brown).

I learned SO MUCH about cross training, and you will love it!

Saw our Instagram with this and thought it was so cool!

  • I think having a cross training tool is such a great idea. If you think about it, most people spend that amount on a gym in a few years and you have something you can use anytime. I think it’s an investment for you honestly. I think everyone needs some sort of other training device whether it’s going to the gym or using an elliptigo. Those are really cool though, I got to demo one at work once!

I do think this looks like a great cross-training tool! I love that you can use it outside versus being stuck in a gym or in the pool. One day when I win the lottery this will be one of the first things I buy:) It actually does sound like a good investment, but I have a feeling my husband won’t see it the same way. Maybe as they get more popular they will become more affordable…wishful thinking right?!

  • This is so very cool! I have wanted one of these for a little while now myself but I can’t justify the price. I’m so glad you were able to get one and I LOVE the name!! I actually saw someone riding one up to my gym a few weeks back and I nearly tackled him to the ground since I have never seen one “in real life.” He said he LOVES his and I could ride it anytime. Well, I have no clue who he is but I almost asked for his number. I just hope I see him again or maybe I can rent one?? Enjoy yours and keep us updated on how you’re using it – workouts, duration, hill climbs, etc.

LOVE IT!!! I have a street strider which is “fine” but I still covet the ELLIPTIGO. a lot lot.

  • Oh i so want to try this, but um… have you see where i live and all the hills? I’d die!

  • Wow this sounds awesome! I’d definitely be keen to get one if it were a bit cheaper. I wouldn’t care if I looked a bit strange in my local town hehe!
My question is whether it’s a good replication of running in terms of form…does it replicate ‘good’ running form or is something you have to be careful about? I don’t know if this makes sense, but if you’re on it for a while and then start running later you want to make sure it’s doing favours for your form not getting you into bad habits. I’m just curious! 🙂

    • Just like running its an art and you could spend a lifetime improving.
You’ll find its great for running and you WON’T lose form as you’re upright and have to maintain good form. You can really ‘go into the zone’ on these machines (I know as I have one), and with just you and the road to think about – really FOCUS on how you’re feeling, where you’re feeling it and presenting great posture.
Elliptigo’s are refreshing to ride. PS Hills are easier as the wheels are smaller, than a normal bike BUT you do have a bit of weight to pull up (the machine).
Never regretted buying mine – I did it on credit over 20 months which flies by

I totally want one! It’s driving me nuts not to be able to run or really do much of anything right now. Love its name too! So glad that you were able to add this to your toolbox!

  • That looks like so much fun!! I love that you can take it outside.. the indoor elliptical gets boring reeeeally fast.

  • I’ve been dying to try one of these! Great for cross training

  • So cool! I need one of these!!

  • I have seen these! They look like so much fun. And yea, they are expensive, but a good treadmill costs about the same!!
